Forensic Artist & Serial Killer: Will They End in a Draw?

Deb’s Dozen: Serial killer stalking forensic expert—can she out-psych him and live?

Carrie Stuart Parks is a forensic artist and teaches law enforcement professionals. All her background and experience come into play in The Bones Will Speak, the second Gwen Marcey novel.

Gwen, working from home after life interfered with her career, has a nice life near the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana with her daughter, Aynslee, and her Great Pyrenees dog, Winston. Winston has a penchant for digging up and bringing home the most unusual things, but the object that tops all is a skull filled with bugs. If there’s something Gwen hates more than Winston’s trophies—right, bugs. Gwen calls the sheriff, who is not sure Gwen has not lost her mind. Typical Gwen, she is off to investigate on her own.

From the female skull to another female victim who looks much like Aynslee to a series of untoward accidents, Gwen comes to the realization that the killer is targeting her and her daughter. And off they go in a race to discover who the killer is before he can claim any more victims. Throw in a divorced husband, a savvy friend, and a prospective romance and you’ve got all the ingredients necessary for a neck chilling, spine-tingling murder mystery. Four stars.

Bones Will SpeakAs mentioned, Carrie is a forensic artist who has written/illustrated many books on drawing. She is a breast cancer survivor and began to write fiction as she was battling the disease. Her mentor was best-selling author Frank Peretti—she obviously learned much of her craft from that master of the macabre. Carrie is in remission from her cancer and continues to encourage other women following that path. She can be found on Facebook at CarrieStuartParksAuthor.

Thomas Nelson gave me an Advance Reader’s Copy of The Bones Will Speak, but I was in no way obligated to write anything other than an unbiased review.

Oh, what tangled webs we weave …

Deb’s Dozen: “Oh, what tangled webs we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”

Finn McGregor, the youngest of the almost mythical McGregor brothers, has had his six-year Army Ranger career ended by a traumatic accident. Recovering from PTSD and attempting to return to his previous physical condition without the interference of his big brothers, Finn has rented an isolated cabin in the woods. Hoping for peace, he is startled to hear a woman screaming and screaming in the night. Instincts kicking into action, he’s out of the cabin and following the scream. Bursting into a neighboring cabin, he startles awake its resident, Dana Lewis, and truly terrifies her.

Dana, recovering from a trauma of her own, is not sure about this new neighbor, but there is electricity other than fear between them. Smitten with the pretty neighbor, Finn offers first to repair the door he broke and then finds other chores to keep him near.

Meanwhile, the sheriff in town has been presented with a huge temptation. Keeping his Alzheimer’s afflicted wife in the best care facility around has bankrupted him. The manager is threatening to evict his wife and the sheriff is at his wit’s end. He and the resident bad boy, a meth cooker, cross paths which weave them together in a tangled fashion. Seems the meth lab is close to Dana’s cabin and he is trying to chase/frighten her away.

What will Finn and Dana do about the disturbing incidents that keep happening around Dana’s cabin? Will the sheriff return to the straight path? What about that electricity? And will the older McGregor brothers be able to stay out of the mix?

The Blueberry Barrens are Barren!

Deb’s Dozens: Kate’s blue; the blueberries—ruined, her prospects—barren. Drake Newham—a rescuer?

What fun to reacquaint yourself with characters you loved. Colleen Coble’s Sunset Cove series ends with Twilight at Blueberry Barrens. We will love to live Kate Mason’s story—she’s had such a tragic life. After being reunited with a sister she didn’t know she had, Kate’s blue. Her beloved blueberry barrens are just that—barren. And now her sister, Claire, and her new husband, Luke, are married and she feels alone again. With her sister off on her honeymoon and no income in sight, Kate decides to renovate and rent the cottage across the road from hers.

Enter Drake Newham, newly parenting the two little girls left behind by the apparent murder-suicide of their parents. Drake is rich and quite convinced his brother was murdered. Their meeting appears to solve problems for both of them. Kate will be a nanny for the girls and Drake will rent the cottage. That solves Kate’s immediate financial problems—but what about Drake’s brother? Another four star book!

Twilight at Blueberry Barrens is set on the beautiful coast of Maine. Colleen and her husband, Dave, researched the area and fell in love. Maine is the setting for all three of the Sunset Cove books and you will fall in love with the Maine Coast from the descriptions. Colleen always visits the locale of her stories so the details and descriptions will be accurate. I believe I’ve read most, if not all, of Colleen’s books and never get tired of reading her stories. Her characters come to life and you can’t help but care about them. Kate Mason and Drake Newham are no exception and the two little girls are adorable.

Colleen CobleColleen is a USA Today best-selling novelist, who has almost four million books in print. She writes romantic suspense/mysteries because “she likes to see justice prevail.” In addition to writing, Colleen serves as CEO of American Christian Fiction Writers. She lives with her husband, Dave, in Indiana.
