In His Presence

This weekend, I have the privilege of attending the New England Writers’ Conference up in the mountains of northern New Hampshire. As I drove from our home in Plymouth, through Massachusetts, and up to the mountains, I was continually struck by the beauty of nature. I marveled at the multiplicity of colors and how they coordinated with each other. I was amazed at the vistas of the valleys I passed. I could not help but give thanks and sing praises to the One who created all of this for us to enjoy!

This morning I was reminded of the honor that those of us who write have to convey His words and His wisdom to others as we write. We have an incredible responsibility to write what is true and beautiful and what will edify the minds and lives of our readers. We write, if we are honest, not because we want to do so. The hours are long – an author is never not writing – every event we encounter during the days and weeks is either research or fodder for our next piece. Writing is a lonely work – most of us labor at our keyboards without much company until we choose to reenter “the world.” Most of us labor knowing that what we write will not bring us monetary success or fame. We write because He has laid the task on our hearts – and we know that His words never return to Him void. He speaks through our words to those that need to hear – even if that is only one person – or even just ourselves.

We’re not perfect, most of us are far from perfection. Most of us have problems, have flaws, have unloveable characteristics – just like you do. We write so that you know that you are not alone – that there are others in this world who have the same trials, problems, and unloveable people in their lives that you do. We want you to know that you are loved – by us and by Jesus. None of us are too bad, or ugly, or lost to not be loved by Him.

I publish this blog so that you may find resources to help you “Walk With Jesus Through Words.” I read Christian works and interview Christian authors so that you may find words and people who speak to you where you are. These books and authors have graced and blessed my life – and I’m privileged to share them with you. My hope is that you will read my words and theirs and will be graced and blessed, too. In this, as in all things, I give Him the glory and praise. May God gift you with His presence today and always as you walk through this beautiful world He has given us in which to live.

Diamond Rings are Deadly Things – and Wedding Dresses can be Poison! by Rachelle J. Christensen

I’ve always thought that planning weddings would be a fun occupation – but I’ve also heard about various bridezillas that can populate the wedding scene. Adrienne Pyper is a wedding planner – she knows her way around dresses and cakes and invitations and favors. Until her best friend was murdered right before her wedding, she thought life was wonderful. Shattered by Briette’s death, she pulled up stakes and moved to Sun Valley, Idaho – a beautiful resort community that attracts all sorts of beautiful people. With the aid of her friend and co-worker, Lorea, Adrienne has managed to land two huge weddings – one for a popular movie star and his bride-to-be, Natalie, and one for the bridezilla to end all bridezillas.

Life is good. Adrienne’s business is going well; she’s loving her new home, and she even has a prospective beau or two – Dallas, a waiter from a fancy restaurant, asked for her phone number. He’s cute, somewhat shy, and very intent on dating her. The other possibility, at least in her mind, is the hunk she keeps running into while running. Said hunk keeps turning up – but, no! He’s the new divorce lawyer in town and does not believe in weddings.

Their first shipment of wedding dresses comes in from China – including the dress for Natalie and the one for Bridezilla. After the two fittings, Adrienne and Lorea are fit to be tied – Natalie’s a dream and they love working with her. Bridezilla, aka Sylvia, is the opposite – a real nightmare. Then some dresses are stolen – including Sylvia’s. Life just got very bad. On the plus side, there is Dallas – and the hunk, Luke. You’ll love the mysteries in this book – yes, there are more than one. Christensen keeps us guessing at the outcomes all the way to the end of the book. A great read – very entertaining and well-written.

BTW – after reading Diamond Rings, I no longer want to be a wedding planner – I’ll stick to blogging.

I was given a copy of Diamond Rings are Deadly Things by Shadow Mountain for my unbiased review.

A Collision in the Dark…the Victim…Vanished by Irene Hannon

Pulitzer Prize-nominated reporter Moira Harrison, lost in a blinding rainstorm after dark, suddenly sees a terrified figure in her headlights. Slamming on the brakes, she tries to avoid the person, but loses control of her car. She feels the impact and then careens into the woods, finally striking a tree to come to a crashing stop.

Shaken, she knows she must call 911 to help the person she struck and to report the accident. A man appears at her car door to find out if she’s okay—then tells her there’s glass on the seat—to be careful while he brushes it off. Shifting in the seat, she feels the glass penetrate her thigh. The man tells her that he will look for the person and call 911. Then her world goes black.

When she comes to, she is alone—no emergency vehicles are there. She makes her way to the road, but the person she struck has vanished—only skid marks remain. She can’t convince the police who respond to her call that there was a person—in fact, she can’t convince anyone. Moira can’t forget the look of terror in the woman’s eyes, though, and so she decides to see if a private detective firm will take the case. Reluctantly, the ex-homicide detective turned private eye decides to investigate.

As clues begin to surface, they find that someone doesn’t want the case solved—and will go to any lengths to prevent them from doing so. You will want to help Moira and Cal Burke, the handsome P.I. assisting her to find the solution. A great read – you’ll want the entire series!

Irene Hannon is the author of several action-mystery series including The Heroes of Quantico and Guardians of Justice. This, the first of the Private Justice novels, is a worthy addition. Hannon has more than 40 novels to her name, two RITA Awards from the Romance Writers of America, a National Reader’s Choice Award, and a Daphne du Maurier Award.
